London, as winter sets in... Lynley, Havers, Nkata, Saint James and the others are on the front foot. Is this why their disappearance initially went unnoticed? In any case, the police did not begin their search until it was too late. Aware of the magnitude of the task, the Scotland Yard hierarchy summoned a psychologist trained as a profiler to assist Lynley. Convinced that the psychologist was going to get in the way, Lynley took a stand. The investigation gets off to a flying start. The Chief Constable holds one press conference after another, and black sergeant Winston Nkata is urged to attend. Just to show that the Yard is not racially prejudiced. As the victims come from underprivileged backgrounds, the reader enters the soot-streaked, graffiti-ridden London of the hotspots. A far cry from the affluent neighborhoods where Lynley and her ilk live...
